Gateway’s professional development for teachers rests on the same philosophical grounds as its education for students: by building on individual strengths and self-knowledge, teachers can develop their teaching practice and impact students’ educational outcomes. Our growth mindset learning orientation for teachers empowers them to create a growth mindset learning environment for students.
Professional development occurs weekly and follows arcs of inquiry. These learning cycles mirror the same goal-setting, implementation, reflection, differentiation and outcomes-based assessment processes that we expect of our students. In this way teachers are continually reconnecting with their students’ learning experience as they simultaneously deepen their pedagogical knowledge, skills and habits. Professional development focuses on a few key goals each year that are connected with the school’s mission and current student needs. By centering teacher learning on a few core practices, common school-wide implementation of ideas is supported.
