As educators, we are always preparing students for the next step in their lives. Since the road to many careers involves college, students learn about the college experience from day 1 at Gateway. In grades 6 - 9 students take an annual tour of a local college --University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, Stanford University, and the University of California, Berkeley. In middle school advisories, students research the offerings at universities around the country. Then in high school they commence concrete planning to choose and apply to college.
To develop students’ college and career readiness, Gateway maintains a student opportunities resource website and regularly taps into local expertise through lunch time career awareness sessions called Pizza and Possibilities. This multilayered approach to college and career readiness has been validated in research by organizations including the Annenberg Institute for School Reform.
