Description
The Kalpulli Leadership Program mission is to educate, organize, and empower youth and young adults ages 13 to 18 years old. In the indigenous Nahuatl language "Calpulli" literally means "large house". Calpulli's are neighborhoods or groups organized to carry out a common purpose such as cultural activities, education of children, protection, or the care for community members. HOMEY Kalpulli focuses on developing participants to critically think and become leaders. They do this by conducting non-traditional workshops that focus on addressing and combating internalized oppression, discrimination, disenfranchisement and other social ills that have common roots in poverty and lack of education and resources in the Latino/a community. Additionally, they engage participants in cultural and enrichment activities to foster community building and socialization. For the past decade HOMEY has developed many successful leaders through this program. Program highlights include activism and advocacy training, field trips, internships and a stipend for students who complete the program.
