Summer Programs

DiverseCity, Inc. is a non-profit youth development organization that brings together kids from diverse backgrounds. The program is founded on the belief that athletics can be used as vehicle for real change in our society. During a time when socioeconomics still results in real segregation, DiverseCITY believes that sports can be used as tools to help bridge divides.

We currently run programs in Milwaukee, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco. DiverseCity offers three programs:

Summer Camps

The New Conservatory Theatre Center (NCTC) offers classes for students to explore theatre with short-term workshops to inspire their imaginations using topics such as puppetry, storybook theatre, stage makeup, improvisation and monologue/audition workshops.

Girls in STEM Summer Program

Developed by Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies with support from corporate partners and community organizations, the Columbia Girls in STEM Initiative helps bridge the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and math education. It prepares young women from underrepresented populations to enter college and the workplace with increased confidence and capability. The STEM Initiative engages young women through hands-on instruction in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) while developing their leadership and communication skills.

826 Valencia: Student Workshops

826 Valencia offers a variety of free workshops for students over the summer months. The topics range from academic essentials like SAT-prep and college-entrance essays, to more imaginative forms of writing like fiction, non-fiction, cartooning, and bookmaking. Each workshop is designed and taught by talented volunteers, many of them published authors, magazine founders, teachers, and filmmakers. Many workshops are stand-alone projects, and some are recurring.

826 Valencia: Young Author's Workshop

Each summer, 826 Valencia hosts its annual Young Authors’ Workshop (YAW). The Young Authors’ Workshop is a two-week intensive writing camp for Bay Area students entering grades ten through twelve. The camp features writing workshops and seminars led by guest authors. This is a great opportunity for students to team up and, with the support of professional writers, poets, and spoken word artists, craft amazing work. The camp is open to twenty-five students who are excited to embark on a transformative journey as they develop their literary voices.
